In Avowed, Companions are not just for their stories and dialogue but also for their practical utility in gameplay, from opening new paths to enhancing combat. Here's a ranking of the Companions from least to most effective, based on their abilities and overall impact on your journey through the Living Lands.
- Marius

In my experience with Avowed, Marius didn't quite mesh with my preferred playstyle. His passive abilities are useful early on for exploration, helping you locate items and plants. However, he quickly becomes less valuable as other Companions join your team. Marius excels in controlling enemies with his abilities, but his lack of raw combat power makes him less desirable for the majority of your adventure.
- Blinding Roots: Roots enemies in place for 8 seconds, upgradable to stun, trap multiple enemies, and cause Bleed Accumulation.
- Heart Seeker: A piercing shot that always hits, upgradable to target two enemies, deal more damage to those below 50% health, and reduce cooldown.
- Shadow Step: Vanishes and reappears to slash enemies, upgradable to instantly kill stunned enemies, deal more damage to those with lower health, and strike up to six enemies.
- Wounding Shots: Attacks cause Bleed Accumulation, upgradable to reduce enemy damage reduction, slow hit enemies, and further reduce enemy damage.
Marius' abilities are niche, best suited for melee-focused Envoys against specific enemy types.
- Giatta

Giatta, an Animancer, focuses on support, using magic to heal, shield, and buff your party. While not the strongest in terms of damage, her utility shines in critical situations, such as boss fights. Her abilities are essential for maintaining your party's health and effectiveness.
- Purification: Heals allies by 25% of their maximum Health, upgradable to heal up to 50%, interrupt and knock back enemies, and increase damage reduction.
- Barrier: Grants temporary health for 20 seconds, upgradable to increase temporary health, heal enemies when the barrier ends, and protect Giatta from melee attacks.
- Acceleration: Boosts move and attack speed for 15 seconds, upgradable to reduce damage taken, extend the duration, and reduce ability cooldowns.
- Reconstruction: Attacks heal allies slightly, upgradable to heal more when allies are below 20% health, grant temporary health, and revive incapacitated allies upon killing an enemy.
Giatta's ability to power Essence Generators also unlocks new areas, making her a valuable asset, especially for Envoys using Wizard builds.
- Kai

Kai, the first Companion you meet, remains useful throughout your entire journey in Avowed. As a tank, he can absorb damage and deal significant blows without much need for micromanagement. His abilities are versatile, effective against both single targets and crowds.
- Fire and Ire: Fires from his Blunderbuss, dealing high stun and taunting enemies, upgradable to ignite targets, increase stun, and reduce cooldown.
- Unbending Defense: Regenerates health and increases damage reduction, upgradable to further reduce damage, increase health regeneration, and unleash a damaging shockwave.
- Leap of Daring: Crashes down on enemies, stunning and taunting nearby foes, upgradable to increase area of effect, gain temporary health, and boost attack damage.
- Second Wind: Revives himself by restoring 50% of his maximum health, upgradable to restore more health, increase attack speed, and reset ability cooldowns.
Kai's self-revival and ability to clear obstacles like spider webs and roots make him an invaluable ally.
- Yatzli

Yatzli, a powerful Wizard, brings high-damage attacks and excellent crowd control to your party. Her abilities make her akin to air support in the fantasy setting of the Living Lands. Despite being the last Companion you recruit, her impact is immediate and significant.
- Essence Explosion: Explodes on impact, releasing essence and dealing damage, upgradable to increase blast size, cause fire accumulation, and reduce cooldown.
- Minoletta’s Missile Battery: Fires a volley of arcane missiles, upgradable to increase fire rate, range, and cause shock accumulation.
- Arduos Delay of Motion: Slows enemies for 10 seconds, upgradable to intensify slowing, affect an area, and cause frost accumulation.
- Blast: Attacks cause a small area of effect, upgradable to deal explosive damage, break blocks, destroy walls, and shatter frozen enemies, with a chance to inflict Frozen, Ignited, or Shocked status.
Yatzli's ability to clear obstacles and her powerful, versatile abilities make her the top choice for any Envoy navigating the challenges of Avowed.
Avowed is set to release on PC and Xbox on February 18.
