Tencent, a leading Chinese technology company, has reportedly secured a controlling stake in Kuro Games, the developer behind the popular titles Wuthering Waves and Punishing: Gray Raven. This acquisition significantly alters the landscape for both companies.
Tencent's Increased Investment in Kuro Games
Majority Shareholder Status Achieved
Tencent's share in Kuro Games has risen to approximately 37%, giving them a commanding 51.4% total ownership. Following the departure of other shareholders, Tencent now holds the majority stake and is the sole external investor in Kuro Games. This follows an initial investment made in 2023, showcasing Tencent's growing confidence in the studio.
Maintaining Operational Independence
According to reports from Youxi Putao, a Chinese news outlet, Kuro Games will retain its operational independence despite Tencent's majority ownership. This mirrors Tencent's approach with other successful studios like Riot Games (League of Legends, Valorant) and Supercell (Clash of Clans, Brawl Stars). Kuro Games' official statement emphasizes that this acquisition will foster a "more stable external environment" and bolster its long-term independent strategy. Tencent has yet to publicly address the acquisition.
Kuro Games' Successful Portfolio
Kuro Games is a prominent Chinese game developer renowned for its action RPG Punishing: Gray Raven and the recently released open-world RPG Wuthering Waves. Both games have achieved considerable success, each generating over $120 million USD in revenue and receiving ongoing updates. Wuthering Waves' recognition extends to a Players' Voice nomination at The Game Awards.
