"Super Mario World: Unannounced Sequel Title Briefly Appears in NBCUniversal Press Release"

By RyanMay 22,2025

It appears that we might have an early glimpse at the title for the sequel to *The Super Mario Bros. Movie*, thanks to an NBCUniversal press release that was quickly retracted. The press release, which was meant to highlight NBCUniversal's Upfront Showcase offerings, inadvertently mentioned *Super Mario World* as one of the upcoming films from Universal Pictures and Illumination set to be available on Peacock.

The leak was swiftly noticed across the internet, prompting Universal to revise the press release, removing any references to Mario. This change was highlighted by a tweet from Wario64, showcasing the before and after of the press release:

The original text in the press release grouped *Super Mario World* with *Shrek* and *Minions*, which are known to be *Shrek 5* and *Minions 3*, respectively. This suggests that *Super Mario World* might be a placeholder or an umbrella term rather than the final title for the Mario sequel, similar to how the other films were not simply titled *Shrek* or *Minions*.

However, *Super Mario World* is a more specific title than a generic *Super Mario* or *Super Mario Bros.*, which lends some credibility to the possibility that it could be the actual title. Given the history and popularity of the *Super Mario World* game, using this title for the next Mario movie would certainly resonate with fans.
