Suikoden's latest installment, Suikoden STAR LEAP, is poised to bring the franchise's renowned experience to mobile devices. In an insightful interview with Famitsu on March 4, 2025, Star Leap's developers shared their vision and approach to the game.
Star Leap Producer Shinya Fujimatsu explained the decision to launch on mobile platforms, stating, "Our goal was to make Suikoden accessible to as many people as possible. Mobile devices are the most convenient way to play, and we wanted to ensure that Star Leap retains the essence of Suikoden, challenging ourselves to create a numbered entry in the series."
The development team is committed to delivering a game that matches the quality of console titles in terms of visuals, sound, and storytelling, while embracing the convenience and accessibility of mobile gaming.
Expressing Suikoden in STAR LEAP
Fujimatsu highlighted the unique aspects of Suikoden, emphasizing the series' focus on themes of war and friendship. He noted, "In Suikoden STAR LEAP, it's crucial to portray the narrative of the new 108 stars, a hallmark of the Suikoden series."
Director Yoshiki Meng Shan further elaborated on the series' distinctive features, mentioning the blend of a light-hearted atmosphere with serious scenes. He added, "The battle tempo and the cooperative nature of many characters in combat are also quintessential elements of Suikoden."
Both a Sequel and a Prequel to the Series
Star Leap is designed to serve as both a sequel and a prequel to the Suikoden series, traversing various eras throughout its narrative. This new installment will officially become part of the Suikoden canon, starting two years before the events of Suikoden 1 and extending into other periods, effectively linking to Suikoden 1 through 5.
Fujimatsu expressed enthusiasm for the game's quality, encouraging both new and veteran fans to dive in. He said, "We've made Star Leap user-friendly for mobile, ensuring it's easy to get into the story and gameplay, even if you're new to the series. We hope it will serve as an excellent entry point into 'Suikoden Genso'."
