The journey to remaster Suikoden 1 and 2 took a meticulous five years, driven by a commitment to preserve the essence of the classics. In an insightful interview with Dengeki Online on March 4, 2025, the developers behind Suikoden I & II HD Remaster (Suikoden 1 and 2 HDR) shed light on their approach to crafting a remaster that stays true to the originals.

Initially announced in 2022 with a planned release in 2023, the project faced delays, pushing its launch to this year. Takahiro Sakiyama, the Game Director of the Suikoden Gensho series, explained that the team's relentless debugging efforts in the final stages necessitated a review, leading to the postponement.

Tatsuya Ogushi, the Game Director for Suikoden 1 and 2 HDR, emphasized their cautious approach: "We began by assessing the situation thoroughly. After consultations with Sakiyama about quality standards, it became evident that significant areas required further attention and refinement."

Reviving the Series

The remaster project marks the first stride in reviving the Suikoden franchise. Rui Naito, the Suikoden series Producer, outlined their overarching vision for the series and the potential for future endeavors.

Naito stressed the importance of a strong foundation: "This remaster is our initial step in bringing back the Suikoden IP, and we couldn't afford to falter. The directive was clear: 'make it solid.' For Suikoden I&II HDR, I instructed Sakiyama and the team to create something robust, as a weak start could jeopardize the entire revival effort."

During the Gensou Suikoden Live event on March 4, 2025, Konami unveiled a range of exciting projects aimed at rejuvenating the Suikoden franchise. Naito views this event as a crucial second step in the revival process, though he remains uncertain about the total number of steps required to fully bring back the series.

He elaborated on their ongoing efforts: "We're meticulously refining Suikoden I & II HDR while also dedicating ourselves to the forthcoming mobile game, Suikoden STAR LEAP, and the Suikoden II anime." Naito added, "Once these projects are successfully launched, we'll be in a better position to plan our next moves."

Konami also announced "Suikoden: The Anime," an adaptation of Suikoden 2's storyline, marking a new venture for Konami Animation. Additionally, a mobile game titled "Genso Suikoden: STAR LEAP" was introduced, with teaser trailers for both the anime and the mobile game released, though specific release dates remain undisclosed.
