Street Fighter Live-Action Adaptation Lands New Director

By SebastianFeb 21,2025

Legendary Entertainment's upcoming Street Fighter movie has found its director: Kitao Sakurai, the creative force behind the comedic masterpiece, The Eric Andre Show. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sakurai will helm this new adaptation, with Capcom deeply involved in the production process. The film is slated for release on March 20, 2026.

PlayThis isn't the first time Street Fighter has graced the silver screen; the 1994 adaptation, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Ming-Na Wen, and the late Raul Julia, remains a cult classic despite mixed initial critical reception. While casting details are still under wraps, fans can anticipate seeing their favorite Street Fighter characters brought to life.

The project initially saw Danny and Michael Philippou (directors of Talk to Me) attached, but they left last summer. Sakurai's involvement suggests a potential shift towards a more absurdist, comedic tone, mirroring the style of The Eric Andre Show. This stylistic choice could inject a fresh, potentially exciting, and arguably more faithful interpretation of the game's often over-the-top nature.

For those eager to experience the latest in the Street Fighter franchise, Street Fighter 6 is available now, recently adding Mai Shiranui to its roster. Read IGN's full review for a comprehensive look at the game.
