Square Enix, the publisher behind Dragon Quest, is preparing to revive another beloved title: Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past.
According to a report from MP1st, internal documents obtained by the outlet outline several upcoming unannounced projects, including a remake of the seventh main installment in the Dragon Quest series.
Interestingly, while other remakes have been explicitly labeled as HD remakes, that designation does not apply here—or at least not according to MP1st—suggesting this release will offer more than just a visual upgrade or a simple remaster. What exactly that means remains unclear for now, and official confirmation may still be some time away.
Based on the leaked documents, this new version of Dragon Quest 7 is expected to launch between early 2026 and 2027, aligning with Square Enix’s next fiscal year and financial projections.
In other Dragon Quest news, keep in mind that the Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake is scheduled to release on October 30, 2025, for PC (via Steam and the Microsoft Store), PS5, Switch, and Xbox Series X/S. Square Enix also recently confirmed the RPG will be coming to the Nintendo Switch 2. We recently shared new details regarding pre-order incentives and an all-new Collector's Edition.
Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii has recently confirmed that Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate has not been canceled. Although Dragon Quest 12 was announced during the series’ 35th anniversary celebration in 2021—the first mainline entry since 2017's Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age—updates since then have been sparse. The last news came in February, when Horii assured fans that the Square Enix development team is “working hard."
"Yes, indeed, I can't share anything specific, and I apologize for that," he stated in May. "We are putting a lot of effort into its development… All I can say is that the next project is shaping up wonderfully, and the team is truly dedicated. Please look forward to it—that’s all I can share at this time."
