Mark your calendars for September 26, when Marvel’s Spider-Man will become the second fully draftable, Standard-legal set in Magic's Universes Beyond line, following the Final Fantasy set and the Modern-legal Lord of the Rings set from 2023. While this set won't include preconstructed Commander decks, **the cards in the Scene Box shown above** are specifically designed for Commander play and **won’t be Standard-legal**.
The journey into the Marvel universe began with last year's Secret Lair featuring Wolverine, Captain America, and more. Now, Spider-Man takes center stage with the first full set inspired by the comics. According to Wizards of the Coast Executive Producer Max McCall, a full set was necessary to truly capture the essence of Spider-Man and his vast array of villains.
"Spider-Man needs a full set to do justice to the character and incorporate the many villains he’s come across over the years," McCall explains. "If we had chosen characters from the Spider-Man canon for a broader set, we would have had to leave out too many iconic figures. We could have included Gwen Stacy and Miles Morales in a non-Spider-Man specific set, but there wouldn’t have been room for Aunt May."
McCall also highlights the unique approach to designing for a Universes Beyond set: "It flips the worldbuilding on its head. In a typical Magic set, we need to establish the setting and location while ensuring the cards are fun to play. However, with characters like Spider-Man, there's an existing familiarity that allows us to add mechanical complexity. When we create a card that reflects 'great power bearing great responsibility,' fans already understand the story, allowing us to focus on recognizable moments that resonate with them."
Head Designer Mark Rosewater discusses how the Magic color pie can represent both heroism and villainy across all five colors. For example, Spider-Man is associated with white, blue, and green. "Spider-Man's sense of obligation to use his power for good aligns with the white color pie. His origin from a scientific experiment and his use of technology, like his web-slingers, fit into the blue category. Lastly, his animal-based powers and destiny connected to spiders and the Spider-Man universe are core to green."
"We're not limiting ourselves to any one [comic] run or series," Rosewater adds. In addition to the Scene Box, the set will include Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Bundles, and Prerelease Packs, all of which are showcased in the gallery above. Although preconstructed Commander decks won't be part of this set, it will feature the return of Welcome Decks. These introductory decks are typically distributed for free by game stores to help new players learn the game in a low-pressure environment.
Alongside this year's Final Fantasy set, Wizards of the Coast has also announced a set themed around Avatar: The Last Airbender. Before that, look forward to two more in-universe sets, Tarkir: Dragonsorm and the space-themed Edge of Eternities.
