Sony Cutting PS4 Games from PlayStation Plus Next Year

By MadisonFeb 22,2025

Sony is phasing out PlayStation 4 games from its PlayStation Plus Essentials and Games Catalog starting January 2026, focusing its efforts on PlayStation 5 titles.

This shift, announced alongside February 2025's PlayStation Plus monthly games, reflects Sony's observation that a significant portion of its player base now utilizes PS5 consoles. The blog post clarified that already-obtained PS4 games remain accessible, and existing Games Catalog titles will stay available until their scheduled removal. Future PS Plus monthly games and Game Catalog additions will primarily feature PS5 titles, with occasional PS4 offerings.

Sony assures subscribers that core PlayStation Plus benefits—including discounts, online multiplayer, and cloud saves—will persist. The company anticipates enhancing the service with regular additions of new PS5 games.

With the PS5's release in 2020, following the PS4's 2013 debut, Sony's decision aligns with the growing PS5 user base and their preference for PS5 games. The future placement of PS4 games within the PS Plus Classics Catalog remains unconfirmed, with further announcements expected closer to the transition date.
