Shrek 5 Release Delayed, Swaps Dates with Minions 3

By ChristopherMay 20,2025

Universal Pictures has recently announced a change in its release schedule, pushing back Shrek 5 to December 23, 2026, and slotting Minions 3 into its former release date of July 1, 2026. This strategic move aligns Minions 3 with the lucrative Independence Day box office, continuing the tradition set by previous films in the Despicable Me series.

Shrek 5, marking the first mainline release in the franchise in 16 years, aims to capitalize on the holiday season. Originally announced in 2016, the project saw a resurgence in 2023 when Chris Meledandri, CEO of Illumination, confirmed its active development and expressed enthusiasm for a potential Donkey spin-off.

Eddie Murphy, the voice behind Donkey, further fueled excitement by confirming that Shrek 5 had been in production for months. "We started doing [Shrek 5] months ago," he revealed. "I did this, I recorded the first act, and we'll be doing it this year. We'll finish it up. Shrek is coming out, and Donkey's gonna have his own movie. We're gonna do Donkey as well."

The release of Shrek 5 will coincide with the 25th anniversary of the original Shrek film, which debuted in 2001. The franchise has since grown with sequels Shrek 2 (2004), Shrek the Third (2007), and Shrek Forever After (2010).

In addition to the main series, the Shrek universe has expanded with the Puss in Boots spin-offs. The first Puss in Boots film was released in 2011, followed by Puss in Boots: The Last Wish in 2022. The latter received widespread acclaim, earning a 9/10 from IGN, which praised it as "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish mixes stunning animation with a poignant, surprisingly mature story to deliver the Shrek franchise's answer to Logan we didn't know we needed."
