Scarlett Johansson, a veteran of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), has firmly stated that her character, Black Widow, is "dead" and she doesn't seem interested in returning to the role anytime soon. During an interview with InStyle, Johansson discussed the future of the Avenger in the MCU while focusing on her upcoming role in the big-budget franchise, *Jurassic World Rebirth*. Despite speculation among Marvel fans about seeing her reprise the role of Natasha Romanoff, Johansson made it clear that she considers her time as Black Widow to be over.
"Natasha is dead. She is dead. *She's dead.* Okay?" Johansson emphasized, responding to fans' hopes for her return. "We’re going to *have* to let it go. She saved the world. Let her have her hero moment." Although Johansson last played the character in the 2021 standalone film *Black Widow*, Natasha Romanoff met her definitive end in 2019's *Avengers: Endgame*, sacrificing herself to save Jeremy Renner's character, Clint Barton, also known as Hawkeye.
Despite the clear-cut nature of her character's demise, fans continue to theorize about potential returns. Johansson acknowledged this, saying, "They just don't want to believe it. They’re like, ‘But she could come back!’ Look, I think the balance of the entire universe is held in her hand. We’re going to *have* to let it go. She saved the world. Let her have her hero moment."
The MCU has a history of bringing back characters, and upcoming films like *Avengers: Doomsday* and *Avengers: Secret Wars* are anticipated not only as the next chapters for the MCU but also as potential platforms for cameo-filled spectacles. While Robert Downey Jr. is set to transition from Iron Man to the first new live-action Doctor Doom in over a decade, rumors have circulated about other iconic characters returning, including a denied claim about Chris Evans reprising his role as Captain America.
Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter, who has died twice in MCU films, is also rumored to appear in the upcoming *Doomsday* project. With so many beloved characters potentially returning, it's understandable that fans speculate about who might appear, even as Johansson firmly denies any possibility of Black Widow's return. Fans will have to wait until May 1, 2026, for *Avengers: Doomsday* and May 7, 2027, for *Avengers: Secret Wars* to see which characters, living or dead, make an appearance.
