Nintendo Switch 2: Power Up with a New Cable?
Rumors suggest the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 may require a more powerful charger than its predecessor. While recent leaks indicate a design similar to the original Switch, a significant difference might lie in its power requirements. The new console is anticipated to launch by March 2025.
Multiple leaks have surfaced, offering glimpses—unconfirmed, of course—into the Switch 2's features. Holiday leaks showcased images allegedly depicting the console, reinforcing the idea of a familiar design with enhancements. Further leaks revealed magnetic Joy-Con controllers, aligning with previous reports of their tablet mode functionality.
Recently, journalist Laura Kate Dale shared a picture of the Switch 2's charging dock, reportedly sourced from a reliable contact on BlueSky (via VGC). This leak suggests the Switch 2 will include a 60W charging cable, implying incompatibility with the original Switch's charger. While the older cable might work, it's likely to be inefficient. Using a 60W cable is recommended for optimal charging.
Charging Cable Compatibility Concerns
Numerous other Switch 2 rumors have circulated. Earlier leaks detailed development kits sent to game developers, hinting at potential titles such as a new Mario Kart and Monolith Soft's Project X Zone. The console's graphical capabilities are rumored to be comparable to the PlayStation 4 Pro, although some sources suggest a slightly lower performance level.
Although the Switch 2 will ship with its own cable, the incompatibility with the original Switch's charger is a potential concern. Gamers who misplace their Switch 2's cable should avoid using the older, lower-wattage cable as a replacement, assuming the accuracy of Dale's report.
