Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto 5 Enhanced Now the Worst User-Reviewed GTA on Steam

By CamilaApr 11,2025

Rockstar's latest iteration of Grand Theft Auto 5, known as GTA 5 Enhanced, launched on March 4th, but it hasn't received the warm welcome on Steam that fans might have hoped for. Currently, it holds a 'mixed' user review rating, with just 54% of the 19,772 reviews being positive. This is a stark contrast to the original GTA 5 on Steam, which, though unlisted at Rockstar's request, boasts a 'very positive' rating. In fact, GTA 5 Enhanced is the least favorably reviewed GTA title on Steam, even falling below Grand Theft Auto III – The Definitive Edition, which has a 66% positive rating.

GTA 5 Enhanced is touted as a free upgrade for PC owners of GTA 5, bringing features previously exclusive to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S versions of GTA Online. These include access to new vehicles and performance upgrades at Hao’s Special Works, animal encounters, the ability to purchase a GTA+ Membership, enhanced graphics, and quicker loading times. All existing PC players can upgrade for free and transfer their Story Mode and Online progress.

However, the process of migrating accounts has proven problematic for many users, fueling the majority of the negative feedback. Players have reported issues with migration, with some expressing frustration over the inability to transfer their extensive gameplay progress. One player's review encapsulated the sentiment, stating, “The GTA Online profile associated with this Rockstar Games account is not eligible for migration at this time,” and expressing reluctance to start anew after hundreds of hours invested. Others criticized the lack of support from Rockstar, with some even questioning the value of the new features compared to the original version.

Despite these setbacks, GTA 5 Enhanced continues to be a popular choice on Steam, achieving a peak concurrent player count of 187,059 since its launch. Yet, these challenges have raised concerns among PC gamers about the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto 6, especially given its planned initial exclusivity to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S in the fall of 2025. A former Rockstar developer has urged PC gamers to remain patient and trust in the studio's plans.

In related news, Take-Two, Rockstar's parent company, is addressing unauthorized GTA 5 content on online marketplace PlayerAuctions through legal action. Additionally, Rockstar has recently acquired and rebranded the developer behind Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition as Rockstar Australia.
