Renowned filmmaker Robert Eggers, fresh off the success of his gothic horror masterpiece Nosferatu, is set to enchant audiences once again with a sequel to the cherished classic, Labyrinth. According to Variety, Eggers will both write and direct this eagerly awaited follow-up to Jim Henson's 1986 dark fantasy, which originally starred David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly. Eggers will collaborate with Sjón, his co-writer from The Northman, to bring this new vision to life. A previous attempt at a sequel, helmed by Sinister director Scott Derrickson, had been in development but stalled without updates since 2023. Now, TriStar and Jim Henson Pictures have chosen to advance with Eggers at the helm.
Originally released in 1986, Labyrinth captured hearts with its tale of the Goblin King Jareth, played by Bowie, who kidnaps the baby brother of Jennifer Connelly's character. She embarks on a thrilling journey through a mesmerizing dark fantasy world, aided by a delightful ensemble of Henson puppets, to rescue her sibling.
In addition to the Labyrinth sequel, Eggers is also directing a werewolf film titled Werwulf, slated for a Christmas 2026 release. Set in 13th century England, the film will feature dialogue in Old English, promising a deeply immersive historical experience. Though details are scarce, it's safe to assume that the transformation into a fearsome wolf monster will play a central role in the narrative.
Nosferatu, released last Christmas, is a stunning remake of the 1922 silent film by F.W. Murnau. Set in 19th century Germany, it follows a young real estate agent dispatched to Transylvania to sell a castle to its enigmatic count. However, his journey unleashes dark, vampiric nightmares that haunt both him and his wife Ellen. Today, Nosferatu received four Oscar nominations, including Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling.
