Project Zomboid: How to Board Up Windows

By ChristopherMar 16,2025

Surviving a zombie apocalypse in Project Zomboid requires more than just finding shelter; it demands securing it. While finding a safe house is the first step, keeping the undead hordes at bay is a whole different ball game. One crucial aspect of base defense is barricading windows, a simple yet effective method to enhance your safety.

How to Barricade Windows in Project Zomboid

To effectively board up your windows, gather the necessary materials: one wooden plank, a hammer, and four nails. Once you have these items in your inventory, simply right-click on the target window. Your character will automatically begin securing the plank, reinforcing the window. Each window can support up to four planks for maximum protection.

Hammers and nails are typically found in locations where you'd expect to find them in real life – toolboxes, garages, sheds, and closets. Wooden planks are commonly found on construction sites, or you can salvage them by dismantling wooden furniture like shelves and chairs if resources are scarce. Administrators can use the "/additem" command to spawn these items.

Barricaded windows significantly hinder zombie access compared to unprotected windows. The more planks you add, the more time it takes for zombies to breach your defenses. To remove planks, right-click on them and select "Remove." Note that you'll need a claw hammer or crowbar to do this.

It's important to note that larger furniture items, such as bookshelves or refrigerators, cannot be used to block windows. Players and zombies will simply pass through them, rendering them ineffective as barricades. However, knowing how to move furniture remains a useful skill for interior design purposes.

For more robust defenses, consider using metal bars or sheets, but remember that this requires sufficient Metalworking skill.
