High Demand for Pokémon TCG's Prismatic Evolutions Leads to Production Increase
The Pokémon Company is responding to unexpectedly high demand for its latest Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG) expansion, Scarlet & Violet—Prismatic Evolutions, by significantly increasing production. This follows reports of widespread shortages impacting both major retailers and smaller, local game stores across the US.
Addressing the Shortage
As reported by IGN on January 16, 2025, the Pokémon Company acknowledged the difficulties some fans are facing in acquiring the new set. A spokesperson stated that they are working at maximum capacity to print more cards to meet the overwhelming demand. While fans may experience delays, the company's commitment to resolving the issue is reassuring.
Impact on Local Retailers
The shortage was first highlighted by PokeBeach, a Pokémon TCG fan website, on January 4, 2025. The report detailed how smaller US stores are disproportionately affected, receiving significantly reduced allocations from distributors compared to larger chains like GameStop and Target. This is partly due to an influx of orders from retailers who don't typically stock Pokémon TCG products. Deguire, owner of Player 1 Services in Maryland, noted that distributors limited supplies by 10-15% for local retailers to spread the product more widely.
This scarcity has led to inflated prices on the secondary market. The Elite Trainer Box, for example, is already selling for $127, significantly above its $55 retail price. However, it's anticipated that increased supply will eventually stabilize prices.
The Prismatic Evolutions Expansion
Initially announced on November 1, 2024, with a release date of January 17, 2025, Scarlet & Violet—Prismatic Evolutions features Tera Pokémon ex, new special illustration rare cards, ultra rare Supporter cards, and reprints of popular cards with new artwork. Notable additions include Teal Mask Ogerpon ex and Roaring Moon ex, illustrated by renowned artists.
