Pokémon TCG Pocket Expands with Space Time Smackdown Today: Full Details

By LilyMay 17,2025

The Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket has just rolled out its latest major update, introducing the Pokémon Diamond and Pearl-themed Space Time Smackdown expansion. This eagerly awaited set brings a fresh wave of excitement with its Dialga and Palkia-themed booster packs, comprising a total of 207 cards. While this number is smaller than the previous set, Genetic Apex, which boasted 286 cards, Space Time Smackdown makes up for it with a higher percentage of rare cards. Out of the total, 52 are alternate art, Star, and Crown rarity cards, offering collectors a tantalizing array of unique pieces to chase.

The official card count for Space Time Smackdown stands at 155, as the alternate arts are not included in the main collection number. This set introduces 10 ex Pokémon: Yanmega, Infernape, Palkia, Pacharisu, Mismagius, Gallade, Weavile, Darkrai, Dialga, and Lickilicky. With the exception of the Dragon type, every Pokémon type now has a new ex Pokémon, and the Darkness type has been bolstered with two.

One of the most significant additions to the game with this set is the introduction of Pokémon Tool cards. These items can be attached to the active Pokémon to provide various battle advantages. Space Time Smackdown introduces three such tools: the Giant Cape, which adds 20 Hit Points to the Pokémon; the Rocky Helmet, which deals 20 HP damage to the opponent's Pokémon whenever the active trainer takes damage; and the Lum Berry, which removes conditions like Poison from the Pokémon.

Battles

With the launch of Space Time Smackdown, new Solo Battles have been added to Pokémon TCG Pocket. Players can now tackle eight new battles in the Intermediate tier, nine in the Advanced tier, and eight in the Expert tier. These battles spotlight new cards from the set, such as Dialga ex and Palkia ex, as well as other notable Pokémon like Togekiss, Bastiodon, Glacion, Magmortar, Magnezone, Rampardos, and Tortrerra.

In the multiplayer arena, it's early days to predict the meta shifts, but cards from Space Time Smackdown show great potential. For instance, Infernape ex can deliver a whopping 140 damage for just two Fire Energy, albeit at the cost of discarding both energies post-attack. Palkia ex, reminiscent of Mewtwo ex, can hit 150 damage for four Energy while inflicting 20 damage to each benched Pokémon at the expense of three Energy. Weavile ex boasts a low-cost attack that can do 30 damage or escalate to 70 if the defending Pokémon is already damaged. Steel type decks are set to receive a significant boost with the addition of Dialga ex and other supportive cards.

Missions and Rewards

Space Time Smackdown also brings a plethora of new missions to the game, maintaining a familiar structure for players. Collecting signature cards will unlock rental decks, while completing the entire set will grant players the coveted Dialga and Palkia icons. Museum missions are back, challenging players to collect 1 Star cards and full art 2 Star cards, with a secret mission titled "Champion of the Sinnoh Region" awarded for collecting the full art Cynthia card and 1 Star cards of her four key Pokémon: Gastrodon, Lucario, Spiritomb, and Garchomp.

Completing missions will reward players with Pack Hourglasses, Wonder Hourglasses, Emblem Tickets for the shop, and more, though notably, the controversial Trading Tokens are absent. To celebrate the introduction of trading, however, Creatures Inc. gifted players 500 of these tokens. New items in the shop include Dialga and Palkia album covers and the Lovely Hearts backdrop, alongside a new Poké Gold bundle featuring Cynthia.

Trading

Despite the buzz around Space Time Smackdown, the trading update has stirred controversy. Creatures Inc. has remained silent on the matter since its release, with their focus firmly on the new set. The "Trade Feature Celebration Gift" included 500 Trade Tokens and 120 Trade Hourglasses, sufficient for one ex Pokémon trade, but the developer has not addressed fan concerns.

The heart of the controversy lies with the Trade Tokens, which are necessary for trading cards at 3 Diamonds or higher. Trading a 3 Diamond card requires 120 Trade Tokens, a 1 Star card needs 400, and an ex Pokémon (4 Diamond card) demands 500. These tokens can only be acquired by selling cards from one's collection: a 3 Diamond card yields 25 Trade Tokens, a 1 Star card 100, a 4 Diamond card 125, a 2 Star card 300, a 3 Star immersive card 300, and a Crown gold card a staggering 1500. Lower rarity cards are not tradable and do not yield any tokens.

This system has been criticized heavily by the community, with fans labeling it as "hilariously toxic" and a "monumental failure." Many feel that the trading feature, meant to enhance community interaction, has instead become a cumbersome and frustrating process.
