Pokémon GO Retiring Support for Legacy Devices

Pokemon GO to Drop Support for Older Devices in 2025

Several older mobile devices will lose compatibility with Pokemon GO following upcoming updates in March and June 2025. This change primarily impacts 32-bit Android devices, leaving many long-time players needing to upgrade their phones to continue playing.

Pokemon GO, the popular augmented reality game, launched in July 2016 and boasts a significant player base. While its peak player count was reached early in its lifespan, millions still actively play the game. However, Niantic's efforts to optimize the game for newer devices necessitate ending support for older models.

On January 9th, Niantic announced that several older Android devices will be affected. The first update in March 2025 will impact some Samsung Galaxy Store downloads, with the June update specifically targeting 32-bit Android devices downloaded via Google Play. While a complete list hasn't been provided, affected devices include (but are not limited to):

  • Samsung Galaxy S4, S5, Note 3, J3
  • Sony Xperia Z2, Z3
  • Motorola Moto G (1st generation)
  • LG Fortune, Tribute
  • OnePlus One
  • HTC One (M8)
  • ZTE Overture 3
  • Various Android devices released before 2015

Players using affected devices are urged to securely save their login credentials. While they can access their accounts after upgrading to a compatible phone, access will be unavailable until the upgrade is complete. This includes any purchased Pokecoins.

Despite this disruption, 2025 promises exciting developments for the Pokemon franchise. The release of Pokemon Legends: Z-A is anticipated, along with rumored remakes of Pokemon Black and White, and a potential new Let's Go title. While Pokemon GO's future plans remain unclear, a potential Pokemon Presents showcase on February 27th may offer further details.
