Pokémon Go Director on Scopely: No Need for Fan Concern

By RyanMay 14,2025

Following the recent acquisition of Pokémon Go developer Niantic by Scopely, the creators of Monopoly Go, fans have expressed significant concerns about the future of the beloved game. Worries range from increased ads to the handling of personal data. However, a reassuring interview with Michael Steranka, a product director at Niantic, featured on Polygon, aims to calm these fears.

In the interview, Steranka highlights the alignment of values between Niantic and Scopely, expressing confidence that the latter would not introduce intrusive advertisements into Pokémon Go. Addressing privacy concerns head-on, Steranka firmly stated that Niantic would not share or sell player data to third parties. He concluded by emphasizing that the transition to Scopely's ownership would minimally impact Niantic's operations, if at all.

If it ain't broke... While it's natural to anticipate some corporate influence, I personally believe that Scopely will not heavily alter the successful formula of Pokémon Go. The game has been, and continues to be, a major success. More significantly, from a business perspective, Niantic's new spin-off team is focusing on expanding the use of AR technology.

Steranka also pointed out the close involvement of The Pokémon Company in decision-making for Pokémon Go, suggesting that any drastic changes not in line with their vision would be unlikely both now and in the future.
