PS5 Pro Disc Drive Shortage Persists: Scalpers and Stock Issues Plague Gamers
The ongoing scarcity of standalone PlayStation 5 disc drives continues to frustrate PS5 Pro owners. Since the PS5 Pro's November 2024 launch, demand has far outstripped supply, leaving many gamers unable to access this essential accessory for their new console.
Sony's decision to release the PS5 Pro without a built-in disc drive, coupled with the continued availability of the separate drive, has created a perfect storm. This situation mirrors the initial PS5 launch in 2020, with scalpers aggressively acquiring and reselling drives at significantly inflated prices. The problem is particularly acute in the UK, where inflated prices add considerable expense to an already premium console.
Both US and UK PlayStation Direct websites remain consistently out of stock. While some third-party retailers like Best Buy and Target occasionally receive limited shipments, these are quickly snapped up, leaving a large number of gamers empty-handed.
The silence from Sony on this issue is notable, especially considering the company's proactive approach to PS5 production during the pandemic. The added cost of the disc drive ($80 from official sources) further exacerbates the problem, making the situation even more challenging for consumers.
The lack of a built-in drive has been a point of contention since the PS5 Pro's September unveiling. With no immediate resolution in sight, PS5 Pro owners are left with little option but to patiently await increased supply and decreased demand.
