PlatinumGames is commemorating the 15th anniversary of the original Bayonetta with a year-long celebration, expressing gratitude to fans for their enduring support. The original game, released in October 2009 (Japan) and January 2010 (globally), garnered critical acclaim for its innovative design and exhilarating gameplay, establishing a legacy that spawned sequels exclusively on Nintendo platforms.

The stylish action, a hallmark of director Hideki Kamiya's previous works (Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe), quickly propelled Bayonetta to iconic status among female video game protagonists. While Sega published the first title across multiple platforms, Nintendo secured publishing rights for the subsequent installments, releasing them on the Wii U and Nintendo Switch. A prequel, Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon, further expanded the lore on the Switch in 2023. Bayonetta also made appearances as a playable character in recent Super Smash Bros. games.

PlatinumGames recently announced a "Bayonetta 15th Anniversary Year" for 2025, promising special announcements and merchandise throughout the year. While specifics remain scarce, the developer encourages fans to follow their social media channels for updates.

Bayonetta's 15th Anniversary in 2025

Early releases include a limited-edition Bayonetta music box from Wayo Records, featuring the Super Mirror design and Masami Ueda's "Theme Of Bayonetta - Mysterious Destiny." Monthly Bayonetta-themed smartphone wallpapers are also being distributed, with January's featuring Bayonetta and Jeanne in kimonos.

Even after 15 years, the original Bayonetta remains influential, refining the stylish action genre pioneered by Devil May Cry. Innovative mechanics like Witch Time continue to inspire PlatinumGames' subsequent titles, including Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and Nier: Automata. Fans eagerly anticipate further announcements throughout the anniversary year.
