A hypothetical poll asking which pro sports game series 2K should tackle next would likely crown NFL 2K the winner. However, 2K is instead teeing off with PGA Tour 2K25, and after a few hours of gameplay, it's a promising offering.

HB Studios, the developer, has a decade of golf game experience, evident in 2K25's polish. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and lacking an extensive course roster (though it includes the PGA Championship, US Open, and Open Championship), the gameplay is enjoyable. Minor issues, like occasional framerate hiccups on PC, didn't detract significantly.

The upgraded EvoSwing mechanic is a highlight. The right stick control scheme (pull down to wind up, push forward to strike) is intuitive, offering adjustable difficulty levels. A forgiving "Perfect Swing" mode caters to casual players, while higher difficulties penalize imprecise inputs. Lateral movement in the tee box adds strategic depth. Playing as cover athlete Tiger Woods enhanced the experience.

MyCareer mode incorporates engaging narrative elements, offering choices that impact stat boosts. Earned VC unlocks gear that further influences stats, alongside skill upgrades through gameplay. Weekly Quests provide ongoing goals.

The MyPlayer creator, though not extensively explored, allowed for reasonable character customization, complemented by skill trees. While multiplayer wasn't tested, the promise of ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies (clubs) is appealing, evoking memories of casual online play in games like Links 2004. Asynchronous multiplayer caters to players in different time zones.

PGA Tour 2K25 excels in its overall competence without exceptional strengths in any single area. This makes it less immediately exciting, but it appears to be a safe bet for golf enthusiasts and those seeking a relaxing gaming experience. A playable demo is currently available.
