Bungie leadership is undergoing a major transition as CEO Pete Parsons prepares to leave the company after 23 years of service, including nearly a decade as chief executive. Current Chief Development Officer Justin Truman, a longtime Bungie veteran, will assume leadership of the studio.
A Leadership Transition After Decades of Service
In an official blog post, Parsons reflected on his tenure: "When I was asked to lead Bungie in 2015, my goal was to make us a studio capable of creating lasting entertainment across generations. Together we launched Destiny's new era, built industry-leading live operations capabilities, and joined PlayStation's family of studios."
"The time for fresh leadership has arrived," Parsons continued. "I'm excited to announce Justin Truman as Bungie's new Studio Head to guide our future."
A Complex Legacy
Parsons' tenure spanned turbulent periods for Bungie. After becoming CEO in 2016, he navigated the company's separation from Activision in 2019 and later its $3.7 billion acquisition by Sony. However, his leadership faced criticism regarding workplace culture and strategic decisions.
Following 2021 reports about company culture issues, Parsons acknowledged shortcomings: "Our actions—or inactions—caused real pain. I personally apologize, as do all Bungie employees who feel deeply about these accounts."
The studio faced additional challenges in recent years, including Destiny 2 performance struggles, Marathon delays (now pushed beyond September 2025), and multiple rounds of layoffs affecting over 300 employees combined.
The Road Ahead
New leadership inherits these challenges as Truman takes the helm. The 15-year Bungie veteran originally joined as a Destiny 1 developer before rising through the ranks.
Truman shared his vision: "At our best, we create meaningful worlds with our players. When we've missed the mark, we've learned valuable lessons. My commitment is to support our team as we pour our passion into Marathon and Destiny—games we love and believe are worth your time."
According to Bungie, Parsons is retiring completely from the studio rather than transitioning to an advisory role.
