How Many Persona Games Are There?

There are currently twenty Persona games. These include mainline entries as well as expanded versions and remakes, which add new story content or enhance the gaming experience. We will list every alternate version of each game in the following sections.

Which Persona Game Should You Play First?

For newcomers, starting with Persona 3 Reload, Persona 4 Golden, or Persona 5 Royal is highly recommended. These are the latest iterations of the third, fourth, and fifth mainline entries, respectively, and are available on PC and most major consoles, with the exception of Persona 3 Reload on the Nintendo Switch.

1. Revelations: Persona (1996)

The first game in the series, Revelations: Persona, was Atlus's response to the positive reception of Shin Megami Tensei: If... Capitalizing on the appeal of high schoolers battling demons, this game introduced a full dungeon-crawling RPG set in the town of Mikage-cho. Players control a group of high schoolers using their awakened Personas to combat shadows and explore dungeons, laying the foundation for the series with elements like the Velvet Room and a teenage cast.

2. Persona 2: Innocent Sin (1999)

The second entry, Persona 2: Innocent Sin, follows a new group of high school students led by Tatsuya Suou. They embark on a mission to defeat the villain Joker and the Masked Circle cult, whose evil plot turns rumors into reality in the town of Sumaru. The game features dungeon exploration, Persona combat, and shadow battles, and it was followed by a direct sequel, Persona 2: Eternal Punishment.

3. Persona 2: Eternal Punishment (2000)

Continuing from Innocent Sin, Eternal Punishment shifts the protagonist role to Maya Amano, who investigates a phenomenon called the Joker Curse. The gameplay remains focused on turn-based combat and dungeon exploration, with players building their party and using Personas to battle shadows.

4. Persona 3 (2006) / Persona 3 FES (2007) / Persona 3 Portable (2009) / Persona 3 Reload (2024)

Persona 3 marked a significant evolution in the series by introducing a daily calendar system. Players control Makoto Yuki, who navigates the mysterious Dark Hour and explores Tartarus, a demonic tower. The game introduced social links and daily activities, becoming a landmark title in the franchise.

Alternate Versions of Persona 3:

Persona 3 has been re-released multiple times. Persona 3 FES added an extra chapter and a female protagonist route. Persona 3 Portable included the female protagonist but not the extra chapter, while Persona 3 Reload is a full remake for modern consoles, omitting the extra chapter and female protagonist route.

11. Persona 5 (2016) / Persona 5 Royal (2019)

What's Next for Persona?

In 2024, fans of Atlus RPGs enjoyed two releases: Persona 3 Reload and Metaphor: ReFantazio, a new RPG from Atlus's Studio Zero. Following the success of Metaphor, Sega has expressed interest in further investing in Atlus and the Persona series.

The next Persona project to watch is Persona 5: The Phantom X, a free-to-play mobile game set in the Persona 5 universe with an original story. It has been released in several Asian markets, with a Japanese release expected soon and a global release anticipated, though no official date has been announced.

Persona 6 is the next eagerly awaited mainline entry in the RPG series, though Atlus has yet to officially confirm its development.
