Overwatch 2's 6v6 Playtest Extended: A Potential Permanent Addition?
Overwatch 2's limited-time 6v6 mode playtest, initially slated to conclude on January 6th, has been extended due to overwhelming player enthusiasm. Game Director Aaron Keller confirmed the mode's continued availability until mid-season, after which it will transition to an open queue format.
The 6v6 mode's popularity surged following its return, reigniting hopes for its permanent integration into the game. Its initial appearance during November's Overwatch Classic event showcased its appeal, quickly becoming one of the most played modes during its brief run. The second playtest, commencing December 17th, initially planned to end January 6th, also proved exceptionally popular.
Keller's announcement on Twitter confirmed the extension, allowing players to enjoy 12-player matches for an extended period. While the exact end date remains unannounced, the 6v6 experimental mode will soon move to the Arcade section. The mid-season shift will change the mode from role queue to open queue, requiring each team to field 1-3 heroes per class.
The Strong Argument for a Permanent 6v6 Mode
The enduring success of 6v6 isn't unexpected. Since Overwatch 2's 2022 launch, the return of 6-player teams has been a consistently top-requested feature. The shift to 5v5 gameplay, while a bold change from the original, has resonated differently with various players.
The extended playtest fuels optimism for 6v6's permanent return, potentially even inclusion in competitive playlists. This possibility hinges on the successful completion of the ongoing playtests.
