Bethesda has confirmed that The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered does not come with official mod support, but that hasn't deterred the game's dedicated fanbase from creating their own unofficial mods. Just hours after the shadow-drop release of Bethesda and Virtuos’ Oblivion reimagining for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X and S, a handful of community mods surfaced on the popular Nexus Mods website. These early mods, though mostly small customization options, underscore the passion of The Elder Scrolls modding community.
At the time of this article's publication, an impressive 22 mods were already available on the site. The first mod to be released allows PC players to customize their desktop by replacing the default Oblivion Remastered shortcut with one of two images featuring the game's infamous Adoring Fan. Other mods enable players to skip the introductory Bethesda and Virtuos logo screens, while others, like one that tweaks the Wizard’s Fury spell and another that removes the compass, offer gameplay customization.
Despite Bethesda's usual encouragement of mod support in its games, the company announced that Oblivion Remastered would not feature official mod support. This was detailed in an FAQ section on its website, prompting players to look elsewhere for mods.
One Nexus Mods user, GodschildGaming, released an Iron Longsword damage mod to demonstrate that modding is still very much possible with Oblivion Remastered. In the mod's description, they stated, "This is just to prove modding is possible. Bethesda says no mod support, I say false. It really is Unreal slapped on top of Oblivion, the data folder is nested in a lot more folders but same concept."
The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered launched today, 19 years after the original game, and is available on PC and consoles. As more players dive into the game in the coming weeks and months, the pool of mods is expected to grow, offering increasingly diverse ways to personalize the gaming experience. While we anticipate more mods, you can explore why some players consider today’s release more of a remake than a remaster and delve into Bethesda's choice to label it as "Remastered."
