Nintendo's New Fukuoka Store Sparks Mixed Reactions

By RyanMay 20,2025

Nintendo has exciting news for fans in Japan, announcing the opening of a new official store, Nintendo Fukuoka, set to launch by the end of 2025. This will mark the company's fourth official store in the country, joining the ranks of Nintendo Tokyo, Nintendo Osaka, and Nintendo Kyoto. Unlike its predecessors located on Honshu, Japan's largest island, Nintendo Fukuoka will be situated in Fukuoka City on Kyushu, Japan's southernmost main island.

The announcement on social media platform X has sparked a wave of celebratory reactions across Japan. Many fans expressed their congratulations and shared their hopes for more Nintendo stores to spread across the nation. There's a notable sentiment among commenters suggesting that Sapporo, the largest city on Hokkaido, Japan's northernmost island, could be the next ideal location for a Nintendo store.

However, not all reactions were positive. A significant number of comments expressed disappointment over Nintendo seemingly bypassing Nagoya, the capital of Aichi prefecture and Japan's fourth-largest city. Nagoya, often perceived as "boring" due to a 2016 survey conducted by its own government, is sandwiched between Tokyo and Osaka, leading to the "Nagoya skipping" phenomenon where events and tours tend to overlook the city. This issue has been highlighted in various media, including the anime "Yatogame-chan Kansatsu Nikki," which delves into the trend. Recent developments, such as the opening of a new 17,000-person arena in July, have fueled hopes among locals and officials that Nagoya's appeal will grow and counteract the "skipping" trend (source: Chukyo TV).

Strategically located within Hakata Station, a major transport hub in Kyushu connected by bullet train to Honshu and by plane to Fukuoka Airport, Nintendo Fukuoka promises easy access for residents of surrounding prefectures and an increasing number of tourists, especially from South Korea, following the lifting of pandemic restrictions (source: Fukuoka Prefectural Government). This new store will not only offer a range of Switch consoles, games, accessories, and merchandise but also host events and hands-on previews of new titles, potentially playing a significant role in promoting the upcoming Switch 2.

In related news, Nintendo recently expanded its presence in the U.S. with the opening of its first West Coast store, Nintendo San Francisco. IGN provided a tour of the store and an insightful interview with Nintendo of America's president, Doug Bowser, to delve deeper into this development.
