Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Have a New Gimmick

Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Function as Computer Mice

Emerging circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons could offer a novel functionality: acting as computer mice. While the practicality of this mouse-like mode for game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative experimentation.

The evidence comes from Famiboards user LiC, who previously accessed Vietnamese customs data related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data source has fueled numerous Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024.

In early January 2025, LiC revealed further findings: customs manifests mentioning polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "to stick to game console handles," and labeled as "mouse soles." This terminology, typically associated with computer mice, hints at potential mouse-like functionality in the Switch 2.

Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were referenced. These numbers haven't been found in public component databases, suggesting they are new, unreleased products. The data indicates both tapes are 90 x 90mm, potentially large enough to cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, though likely requiring trimming during assembly.

Not a First for Handheld Consoles

While unconventional, a mouse-like controller mode isn't unprecedented. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, features a right controller that functions as a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even includes a plastic piece to aid its smooth movement.

The Legion GO also incorporates magnetic rails for attaching controllers—a feature rumored for the Switch 2. This similarity offers a potential preview of Nintendo's hybrid console design.
