New Nintendo Switch 2 Game Revealed by Smash Bros. Creator, Fans Excited

By AaronMay 23,2025

Masahiro Sakurai, the mastermind behind Super Smash Bros., has set the gaming community abuzz by re-sharing the announcement for the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, set to unveil on April 2. His simple "Ooh!" in the post has sparked rampant speculation among fans, who are eagerly anticipating news of a new installment in the iconic fighting series. While Sakurai's comment could simply reflect his own excitement about the upcoming console reveal, it's fueling hopes that a new Super Smash Bros. game might be on the horizon for the next-gen hardware.

Although Sakurai's post alone may not confirm much, there's been a trail of hints suggesting that he might be preparing for another big reveal in the Super Smash Bros. universe. In 2022, Sakurai launched his own YouTube channel, which he later scaled back after hinting that he was far from finished with game development. His final video on the channel was particularly intriguing, as he disclosed that he'd been working on a new game that he hinted could be announced "sooner or later."

What's your favorite Super Smash Bros. game? --------------------------------------------

While no official word has been released about a new Super Smash Bros. game, Sakurai has previously expressed uncertainty about how the series could surpass the achievements of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the Switch. This game broke boundaries by including characters from outside the Nintendo universe, such as Sephiroth from Final Fantasy 7, Sora from Kingdom Hearts, Joker from Persona 5, and Steve and Alex from Minecraft, among others.

Given the phenomenal sales success of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, with over 35.88 million copies sold and counting, the likelihood of a new entry for the Nintendo Switch 2 seems high. Nintendo's tradition of launching a new Super Smash Bros. game with each new console, starting with the N64 in 1999, further supports the anticipation for a new game on the upcoming hardware.
