For Nintendo fans in Japan, April 24, 2025, marks a significant date. On this day, Nintendo planned to announce the winners of the Switch 2 pre-order lottery through the official My Nintendo Store. The anticipation was so high that it led to the temporary shutdown of the My Nintendo Store website for maintenance due to overwhelming traffic. Additionally, Nintendo issued a crucial warning about phishing emails that were falsely claiming to be official Switch 2 pre-order lottery results.
The pre-order lottery for the Switch 2 in Japan opened on April 2, offering winners the opportunity to purchase the console directly from My Nintendo Store, with delivery set for the launch date on June 5. According to Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa’s message, an astounding 2.2 million people entered the lottery, far surpassing Nintendo's expectations. This overwhelming demand means many hopefuls will miss out on getting the console at launch.
As the results of the first Switch 2 presale lottery were revealed today, eager fans flooded the My Nintendo Store, causing Nintendo to take the site offline for necessary maintenance. This frenzy also provided a perfect opportunity for scammers, who began circulating fake lottery results. Users on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) have been sharing screenshots of fraudulent emails to warn others about the scam variations. These phishing emails often promise a win in the Switch 2 lottery, urging recipients to click on suspicious links or make payments immediately to secure their console.
The official warning from the Japanese Nintendo Support account clearly states, “Although we plan to send out the lottery result emails today (April 24), we have not sent them yet. Please be aware that any such emails that you have received up until now were not sent by Nintendo.” This message underscores the importance of vigilance against these scams.

In the U.S., Nintendo has updated its website to inform those interested in purchasing a Switch 2 from My Nintendo Store that delivery by the June 5 release date cannot be guaranteed. This means that invitation emails might arrive after the console's launch. However, Nintendo assures that the shipping date will be confirmed upon purchase. Given the rapid sell-out of pre-orders at third-party retailers overnight, Nintendo suggests that fans might have a better chance of securing a Switch 2 at launch by pre-ordering from these outlets.
The challenges faced by fans trying to pre-order the Switch 2 on April 24, combined with Nintendo's warnings, indicate that obtaining the next-gen console will be difficult around its launch period.
According to a FAQ posted to Nintendo’s website, the first batch of invitations for the My Nintendo Store in the U.S. will be sent starting May 8, 2025. Subsequent batches will be dispatched "periodically" until purchasing is opened to everyone. The initial invitations will be sent on a first-come, first-serve basis to "eligible registrants who meet the priority criteria." Those invited will have 72 hours from the time the email is sent to complete their purchase.
Nintendo Switch 2 pre-order invitation priority requirements:
- You must have been the one who purchased any Nintendo Switch Online membership.
- You must have had any paid Nintendo Switch Online membership for a minimum of 12 months.
- You must have opted in to share gameplay data and have at least 50 hours total gameplay hours.
