Netflix is set to bring the magical world of Dungeons & Dragons to life with a new live-action series titled "The Forgotten Realms." The project is being spearheaded by renowned director Shawn Levy, known for his work on Deadpool & Wolverine, and writer-showrunner Drew Crevello, who previously worked on WeCrashed. This series is based on the iconic fantasy setting of the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game, which has also been featured in the film "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" and the acclaimed video game "Baldur’s Gate 3."
According to Deadline, this upcoming series is poised to be one of Netflix's most significant investments in the fantasy genre. Drew Crevello has written the pilot and will serve as the showrunner, though both Netflix and Hasbro, the parent company of Dungeons & Dragons, have not officially commented on the project. After extensive negotiations, which are typical for such high-profile intellectual property, the series is now moving forward with further development at Netflix. If successful, this could pave the way for an expansive Dungeons & Dragons universe.
While fans eagerly await the Netflix series, there has been no news on a sequel to "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves." Despite the film being well-received by fans, it did not meet box office expectations for Paramount Pictures. Chris Pine, who starred in the movie, expressed his desire to return for a sequel and seemed confident about its prospects in November 2023. However, no further updates have been shared since then. Paramount CEO Brian Robbins has indicated that a sequel could be possible, but it would require a significantly reduced budget.
In other Dungeons & Dragons-related news, Amazon's "Secret Level" anthology series has included a D&D animation, keeping the franchise alive in various media forms.
