The Last of Us May Not Receive Another Sequel

This Could Be The End, According to Naughty Dog

The Last of Us Part 3 Isn't Coming, Claims Naughty Dog President

The Last of Us (TLOU) may not see another sequel, potentially leaving The Last of Us Part II as the final chapter in the acclaimed post-apocalyptic zombie series. In a March 5, 2025 interview with Variety, Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann was questioned about the likelihood of The Last of Us Part III.

Druckmann responded, "I suppose the only thing I can say is, don't count on more of The Last of Us. This might be it." His comments cast doubt on the future of TLOU in gaming as Naughty Dog focuses on elevating the television adaptation.

He had previously shared his perspective on creating game sequels. During the DICE Summit 2025, Druckmann told IGN that he avoids planning multiple games in advance. He elaborated, "I believe you're tempting fate if you start thinking about a sequel while still developing the first game. So when I was working on The Last of Us Part II, sure, ideas about where the story could go next occasionally crossed my mind. But I always approach each project as if it might be my last—I don't hold back ideas for the future. If a compelling concept emerges, I do my best to incorporate it into the current game."

This strongly suggests that TLOU may not receive further video game sequels, especially since The Last of Us Part II provided a relatively conclusive ending to the narrative. However, fans can still engage with the upcoming second season of The Last of Us TV series, premiering on April 13, 2025.

Developing a New Intellectual Property

The Last of Us Part 3 Isn't Coming, Claims Naughty Dog President

Even if The Last of Us doesn't continue as a game series in the near future, Naughty Dog has been actively working on an entirely new intellectual property. At The Game Awards 2024, the studio announced its current development of Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet for PlayStation 5.

The announcement included a brief teaser trailer highlighting the game's science-fiction themes. According to its official website, development began in 2020, and it is shaping up to be Naughty Dog's most ambitious and imaginative story to date. Since the initial reveal, no further details about the game have been shared.

The Last of Us Online Cancelled to Pave the Way for Intergalactic

The Last of Us Part 3 Isn't Coming, Claims Naughty Dog President

It was previously reported that The Last of Us Online was cancelled because Naughty Dog decided to prioritize single-player experiences, hinting at another project in the works. With the unveiling of Intergalactic, it became clear that this was the IP the studio had alluded to.

During a February 19, 2025 interview on the Sacred Symbols+ podcast, former Sony Interactive Entertainment President Shuhei Yoshida explained that The Last of Us Online was discontinued to allow for the development of Intergalactic. Yoshida mentioned that Bungie, the creator of Destiny, advised Sony executives on the demands of live-service games, emphasizing that such titles require not only a successful launch but also long-term maintenance.

Yoshida stated, "The concept for The Last of Us Online originated with Naughty Dog, and they were genuinely excited to create it." He continued, "However, Bungie outlined the extensive resources needed for live-service games, and Naughty Dog realized, 'We can't manage both. If we proceed with this, we won't be able to develop Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.' It was a case of insufficient foresight."

Considering Druckmann's statements and the cancellation of The Last of Us Online, it appears Naughty Dog is moving on from the franchise, at least for now. Nevertheless, fans can anticipate the release of The Last of Us Part II Remastered on PC on April 3, 2025.
