Minecraft's creator, Markus "Notch" Persson, hinted at a potential Minecraft 2 in 2025, sparking excitement among fans. Let's delve into the details of this exciting development.
A Spiritual Successor in the Works?
Notch recently conducted a poll on X (formerly Twitter), revealing his current project: a game blending roguelike elements (like ADOM) with tile-based first-person dungeon crawling (similar to Eye of the Beholder). However, he surprisingly expressed openness to developing a "spiritual successor" to Minecraft. The poll overwhelmingly favored the Minecraft-inspired option, garnering 81.5% of nearly 290,000 votes. Given Minecraft's enduring popularity (45-50 million daily players), this isn't entirely unexpected.
In a subsequent post, Notch confirmed his seriousness, essentially declaring a "Minecraft 2" announcement. He acknowledged the fan desire for a new Minecraft-like game and expressed enthusiasm for revisiting his passion project. He clarified that while the order of development isn't fixed, he's committed to creating a new game and believes a spiritual Minecraft successor is a viable option.
It's crucial to note that Notch sold Minecraft's IP and Mojang Studios to Microsoft in 2014. Therefore, he can't directly utilize any existing Minecraft assets without Microsoft's involvement. However, he assures fans that he respects Mojang and Microsoft's work and intends to avoid any IP infringement. He plans to create a distinct game while acknowledging the success of the current Minecraft iteration.
Notch also voiced concerns about the challenges of creating spiritual successors, acknowledging the risks involved. Despite these concerns, he's leaning towards the project with strong fan support and potential for success.
While awaiting Notch's potential "sequel," fans can anticipate Minecraft-themed amusement parks opening in the UK and US in 2026 and 2027, as well as a live-action film, "A Minecraft Movie," slated for release later in 2025.
