Meet the Recruitable Companions in Avowed

By MiaMay 28,2025

In the world of *Avowed*, traversing the treacherous landscapes of the Living Lands becomes a more manageable feat with the right companions by your side. The game offers four unique Companions, each bringing distinct personalities and upgradable abilities to enhance your journey. Here’s a detailed look at each Companion you can recruit in *Avowed*.

Kai

Kai in Avowed

Kai is the first full-fledged Companion you'll encounter in *Avowed*. Although you can team up with other characters during the tutorial, Kai joins your party officially early in the game at the port in Dawnshore near Paradis. He'll approach you on the dock, and together, you'll embark on a mission to find the Ambassador and the Cleric. Kai remains a steadfast member of your party until you recruit three Companions, at which point you can choose to swap him out at a Party Camp.

An ex-mercenary with a compassionate streak, Kai excels as a tank in combat. His ability to sustain and deal significant damage makes him invaluable. Additionally, Kai's fire abilities can clear obstacles like cobwebs and roots, uncovering hidden paths and valuable loot.

Kai's upgradable abilities include:

  • Fire and Ire, Active: Kai unleashes a powerful shot from his blunderbuss, causing high stun and taunting a single enemy for 10 seconds.
  • Unbending Defense, Active: Kai regenerates health and boosts his damage reduction by 25%.
  • Leap of Daring, Active: Kai leaps down onto enemies, stunning and taunting all nearby foes.
  • Second Win, Passive: Upon reaching zero health, Kai revives himself, restoring 50% of his maximum health.

Marius

Marius in Avowed

Marius, the second Companion you'll meet, shares a past with Kai and can be found in Dawnshore. He joins your party from the moment you encounter him at a bar, where you can either negotiate his way out of a confrontation or assist him in combat against some aggressive NPCs.

As an expert hunter and tracker, Marius enhances your exploration with his Hunter Sense ability, helping you locate loot and crafting materials. In combat, his wild side shines through as he wields a bow and arrow, daggers, and can even manipulate nature to ensnare enemies in roots.

Marius’ upgradable abilities include:

  • Binding Roots, Active: Marius roots an enemy in place for 8 seconds.
  • Heart Seeker, Active: Marius fires a piercing shot that always hits its target, passing through any obstacles.
  • Shadow Step, Active: Marius disappears in a cloud of smoke, reappearing to slash enemies up to three times.
  • Wounding Shots, Passive: Marius’ attacks cause bleed accumulation.

Giatta

Giatta in Avowed

Giatta, the third Companion, joins your party later in the main quest at the Fior settlement in the Emerald Stair Region. As an animancer practicing a controversial form of magic, Giatta plays a crucial role in solving the spiritual mysteries of the Living Lands.

In combat, Giatta serves as a support character. While she may not deal substantial damage herself, her abilities to heal, shield, and buff allies are invaluable. Her unique Spectral Jolt ability can activate Essence Generators, revealing hidden pathways and loot during exploration.

Giatta's upgradable abilities include:

  • Purification, Active: Giatta emits a wave of energy that heals all allies by 25% of their maximum health.
  • Barrier, Active: Giatta provides all allies with a temporary health shield for 20 seconds.
  • Acceleration, Active: Giatta boosts the move and attack speed of all allies for 15 seconds.
  • Reconstruction, Passive: Giatta’s attacks heal all allies slightly.

Yatzli

Yatzli in Avowed

The fourth and final Companion, Yatzli, joins your party during a main quest in the Shatterscarp region, in the city of Thirdborn. Though you may encounter her earlier in the world, she officially joins your team later.

Yatzli is another magic user, but unlike Giatta, she focuses on dealing damage. Her spells are potent, effective against both single targets and crowds. Yatzli’s magic also helps clear obstacles, making her an excellent addition for exploring the Living Lands.

Yatzli's upgradable abilities include:

  • Essence Explosion, Active: Yatzli unleashes an arcane explosion on contact, dealing explosive damage and releasing Essence.
  • Minoletta’s Missile Battery, Active: Yatzli launches a volley of arcane missiles that seek out nearby enemies.
  • Arduos Delay of Motion, Active: Yatzli slows an enemy for 10 seconds by manipulating arcane energy around them.
  • Blast, Passive: Yatzli’s attacks create a small area of effect upon hitting an enemy.

These are all the Companions you can recruit in *Avowed*, each offering unique abilities and support to make your journey through the Living Lands a success. *Avowed is available now on PC and Xbox.*
