A Marvel Rivals Player Created a Playable Doctor Octopus Concept and Fans Love It

By LilyFeb 28,2025

NetEase Games' commitment to releasing a new Marvel Rivals hero every half-season hasn't stifled the creativity of its players. A Reddit user, WickedCube, recently captivated the r/MarvelRivals community with a 30-second gameplay video showcasing a fan-made Doctor Octopus.

The video, initially appearing to depict a pre-Hulk Bruce Banner in a testing environment, reveals a surprisingly polished, playable Doctor Octopus. This eight-armed villain, recognizable to Marvel fans, demonstrates well-conceived movement mechanics. Doc Ock utilizes his arms to magnetize himself to structures, effectively allowing flight within the game's destructible environments. WickedCube even included custom abilities: "Havoc Claw" for melee attacks and "Wrecking Grip" for ranged combat. The post garnered over 16,000 upvotes.

WickedCube, an independent game developer, explained his inspiration: Doc Ock's unique tentacle-based abilities presented a significant development challenge, previously unaddressed in a 3D playable character. A recent PSN outage and exposure to compelling Doc Ock fan art provided the final impetus.

"Doc Ock has always been one of the coolest villains in Spider-Man, and his tentacles would be a challenge to implement," WickedCube stated. "As far as I know, they haven't been fully implemented with playable 3D movement in a game before. It all started when PSN was down and I couldn’t play Marvel Rivals... I thought, ‘Since I can't play right now, why not make it myself?’"

The overwhelmingly positive reception has prompted WickedCube to share his creation process through a YouTube tutorial series and open-source the code on GitHub. He also plans to release playable versions on Itch.io.

NetEase will deploy its own additions to Marvel Rivals this Friday: Human Torch and The Thing, continuing the strong momentum established with Mister Fantastic and the Invisible Woman's release last month. However, the community's enthusiasm for fan-created content like WickedCube's Doc Ock highlights the vast potential of Marvel's character roster.

WickedCube's project stemmed from a community desire for more Vanguard-class characters. While an official Doc Ock remains unconfirmed, WickedCube is already developing concepts for Nightcrawler and Professor X. He praised NetEase's game design and commitment to regular content updates.

Marvel Rivals' Season 1 mid-season update arrives tomorrow, February 21, including the new characters, balance adjustments, and gameplay refinements.
