Marvel Rivals Fans Risk Bans for Modding Despite Season 1 Crackdown

By AndrewMay 04,2025

Despite warnings and a recent crackdown, players of *Marvel Rivals* are risking account bans by continuing to use mods. The game, which saw a highly successful launch in December, has attracted players who enjoy customizing skins, such as turning Iron Man into Vegeta from Dragon Ball and Mantis into a goth. There's also a popular mod that transforms Jeff the Land Shark into Pochita from Chainsaw Man.

With the release of Season 1 and the introduction of the Fantastic Four, *Marvel Rivals* implemented a secret mod restriction through asset hash checking. Developer NetEase reiterated to IGN that the game's terms and conditions strictly prohibit the use of mods, cheats, bots, hacks, or any unauthorized third-party software. NetEase had previously cautioned players about the risks of modding and reinforced this message, stating, "It is not recommended to modify any game files, as doing so carries the risk of getting banned."

However, the modding community remains undeterred. A new workaround, which requires more steps than before, has been discovered and is widely shared online. Modder Prafit, who shared their workaround on Nexus Mods, warned users: “Use at your own risk,” indicating the uncertainty surrounding potential bans. Prafit noted, “By using this you are actually circumventing a system that was created to stop us from modding on the Season 1 patch start. No-one knows if NetEase will ban you, but they have never issued permabans as far as we know.”

Following the introduction of the Fantastic Four, new mods have emerged, including Ercuallo's mod that turns Mister Fantastic into Luffy from the manga *One Piece*. According to Nexus Mods, this Luffy mod has been downloaded over 5,000 times within just two days of its release.

The ongoing question for *Marvel Rivals* modders and users is whether NetEase will follow through with bans. So far, no instances of players being banned for mod use have surfaced, but the availability of workarounds might prompt further action from the developers. NetEase's potential reasons for banning mods include lost revenue from skin sales, intellectual property concerns, and the impact on game balance and performance. Prafit advised that their workaround is best suited for players with high-performance PCs.
