John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, the creative duo behind the critically acclaimed Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, have been tapped to write the screenplay for Lionsgate's upcoming Monopoly movie. The announcement confirms Daley and Goldstein's involvement in adapting Hasbro's iconic board game for the big screen. Margot Robbie, through her production company LuckyChap, will produce the film.
Daley and Goldstein's recent work includes not only Honor Among Thieves, but also their original film, Mayday. Their impressive resume also boasts writing credits on The Flash and Spider-Man: Homecoming.
The journey to bring Monopoly to the silver screen has been a long and winding one. Early discussions date back to 2007, with Ridley Scott initially expressing interest in directing. A 2011 attempt saw Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski attached to write the script, but the project ultimately stalled. Further attempts in 2015 (with Lionsgate, Hasbro, and Andrew Niccol) and 2019 (involving Kevin Hart and Tim Story) also failed to materialize.
However, Lionsgate's acquisition of eOne from Hasbro has breathed new life into the project, paving the way for this latest iteration. With Daley and Goldstein at the helm, hopes are high that this version of the Monopoly film will finally make it past "Go."
