Following the invigorating experience of Elden Ring: Nightreign’s network test, Lies of P Director Choi Ji-Won is brimming with fresh ideas for future projects. At the 2025 Game Developers Conference (GDC), Eurogamer had the opportunity to discuss the evolution of the Souls genre with Choi. Known for his admiration of FromSoftware's creations, which is reflected in Lies of P, Choi shared his thoughts on the upcoming Elden Ring title. "I've tried [Nightreign] and it was very refreshing and new. So that obviously gave me the impression that they're good developers, they always push their boundaries, their imagination and vision, and it shows. In turn, that for some reason motivated me to deliver the Overture experience as good as it could be," Choi remarked.

This experience has opened his mind to the possibilities of multiplayer games. Choi confidently stated, "In terms of our future endeavours, we are definitely open to any sort of consideration in the future."

Despite his affinity for FromSoftware games, Choi made it clear that his inspirations are not confined to a single title. In an interview with Games Radar+ at the 2025 GDC, he explained, "I'm a fan of many, many types of games, and that variety of different experiences and inspirations that I pick up with many different games I love, I sort of mold it into my own Lies of P experience. In the end, it's a combination of diverse inspirations that I get from many games that I love, and then I'm trying to transform that into a Lies of P experience that I'm developing for the fans of Lies of P now."

Overture Takes 15-20 Hours for Experienced Players

Choi revealed that the Overture DLC is designed to take experienced players approximately 15-20 hours to complete, featuring a wealth of bosses and content originally intended for the game’s launch. He elaborated, "Overture is not a complete separate piece from the base game, and there's a lot of interconnectivity between the two, so developing the expansion was almost like an effort to complete the Lies of P experience, and that was challenging."

Set as a prequel, Overture transports players to Krat during its haunting final days, following a legendary Stalker. It encapsulates new ideas, player feedback, and unused concepts from the initial development phase, which were omitted due to production constraints. Choi likened this release to a Director’s Cut, suggesting it feels like the final third of the game.

He noted, "When we released the base game, we had to prioritize, as we mentioned, to do the best quality, so we couldn't deliver everything at once because we wanted to make sure what we can deliver has the best quality." Choi emphasized the invaluable support from the community post-launch, which propelled the team to include all their desired elements in the expansion.

Overture is Not Connected to the Final Cutscene of the Base Game

In an interview with IGN during the 2025 Game Developers Conference, Choi clarified that the Overture DLC does not directly connect to the final cutscene of the base game. While the end of the original game hinted at potential future directions for the Lies of P universe, Choi confirmed in a November 2023 Director’s Letter video that a sequel is in the works, though details on Lies of P 2 remain under wraps.

"What I can certainly tell you is when we share such news or media and assets with you, you'll know for sure that we are ready to present it to you. And that follows very our strict focus on quality [amid] all the pressure that we talked about in the past. So that is the one promise that I can share with you, that when we actually share those contents with you and the news, we will be ready to share that with you," Choi stated.
