A leaked teaser video for the now-canceled live-action Powerpuff Girls series has surfaced online, offering a glimpse into what the show could have been. Originally announced in 2020, the series faced numerous challenges and was ultimately canceled in 2023. The teaser, which was briefly available on the YouTube channel "Lost Media Busters" before being taken down due to a copyright claim by Warner Bros. Entertainment, showcased a darker and more mature take on the beloved characters.
The three-and-a-half-minute trailer depicted Blossom (played by Chloe Bennet), Bubbles (Dove Cameron), and Buttercup (Yana Perrault) as young adults navigating life's complexities. Blossom appears stressed and burnt out, Bubbles struggles with alcohol, and Buttercup is portrayed as rebellious and challenging gender norms. The plot thickens when the trio accidentally kills a human named Mojo and flees Townsville, only to return years later to confront Mojo's son, Jojo, who has become the mayor and is seeking revenge.
The CW confirmed to Variety that the footage was genuine but not intended for public release. The trailer included edgy humor, such as references to juggalos and provocative remarks, highlighting the show's intended mature tone.
The live-action adaptation faced significant hurdles, including a failed pilot that was deemed too campy and not rooted enough in reality. CW chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz commented on the pilot's shortcomings, stating, "The reason you do pilots is because sometimes things miss, and this was just a miss. We believe in the cast completely. We believe in Diablo [Cody] and Heather [Regnier], the writers. We believe in the auspices of Greg Berlanti and Warner studios. In this case, the pilot didn’t work. But because we see there’s enough elements in there, we wanted to give it another shot. So that’s why we didn’t want to go forward with what we had. Tonally, it might’ve felt a little too campy. It didn’t feel as rooted in reality as it might’ve felt. But again, you learn things when you test things out. And so in this case, we felt, let’s take a step back and go back to the drawing board."
Despite the cancellation, the leaked trailer has sparked interest and discussions among fans, offering a fascinating look at what might have been a bold new direction for the iconic characters.
