Square Enix has officially announced the cancellation of Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, the GPS-based mobile action RPG that was set to expand the beloved franchise. Originally scheduled for a 2024 release, the game was designed to take players into the mysterious realm of Scala ad Caelum through an original story tied directly to the overarching battle against the Heartless.
In a recent statement released via the game’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, Square Enix expressed deep regret for the cancellation. The company stated that it had determined “it would be difficult to offer a service that players would find satisfactory over a long period of time,” though no specific details were given regarding the challenges faced during development.
The full message read:
"We wish to convey our heartfelt apologies to everyone who has been looking forward to the start of service. Although we worked hard on developing and adjusting the game in the hope that it would be enjoyed by many players, we determined that it would be difficult for us to offer a service that players would find satisfactory over a long period of time, leading us to the decision to cancel development.
We would like to take this opportunity to express our thanks to everyone who gave us their support and assistance with the multiple closed beta tests. We are truly sorry to have to make this announcement."
Despite the disappointment surrounding the cancellation, Kingdom Hearts fans were given a silver lining. Square Enix confirmed that the series is far from over and that development on Kingdom Hearts 4 is still actively underway.
This marks the first official update regarding Kingdom Hearts 4 in several months. The sequel was initially revealed back in September 2022 with a cinematic trailer but has since remained shrouded in silence — much to the frustration of eager fans. However, series director Tetsuya Nomura has previously hinted that Kingdom Hearts 4 will begin steering the long-running narrative toward its ultimate conclusion after more than two decades and 18 entries in the series.
Square Enix ended its statement with a promise: “The Kingdom Hearts series will continue.” Fans are now eagerly awaiting the next substantial update on Kingdom Hearts 4, hoping for more clarity and perhaps a glimpse into what could be the final chapter of this iconic saga.
