Kathleen Kennedy to Retire from Lucasfilm in 2025

By FinnMay 18,2025

Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy is reportedly planning to step down by the end of 2025. According to Puck News, the seasoned film producer and current head of Lucasfilm aims to retire at the conclusion of her contract this year. Puck also mentioned that Kennedy had considered retiring in 2024 but chose to postpone her decision. However, Variety has cited a source close to Kennedy describing Puck’s report as "pure speculation," whereas The Hollywood Reporter has corroborated Puck's narrative.

Kathleen Kennedy joined Lucasfilm in 2012, initially co-chairing the studio with George Lucas, who personally selected her. After Lucas's departure, Kennedy was appointed president and has since been at the helm of the Star Wars franchise.

During her tenure, Kennedy has overseen the production of the new sequel trilogy, including Star Wars Episodes 7-9, and spearheaded the franchise's expansion into the streaming realm with hits like The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, Andor, Ahsoka, Skeleton Key, and more. While some films, such as "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," have been box office successes, others, including "Solo: A Star Wars Story," have stirred controversy and resulted in financial losses.

Although not officially confirmed, Kennedy's potential departure has sparked speculation about the future of several announced and rumored projects. These include new films directed by James Mangold, Taika Waititi, and Donald Glover, as well as an untitled Rey movie that has been announced but is yet to fully come to fruition.

The upcoming slate of Star Wars projects includes "The Mandalorian & Grogu" and a new Star Wars trilogy helmed by Simon Kinberg.

Before her tenure at Lucasfilm, Kennedy co-founded Amblin Entertainment with Steven Spielberg and Frank Marshall. She has produced numerous iconic films such as E.T., Jurassic Park, Back to the Future, and other 90s classics, earning her eight Academy Award nominations for Best Picture.
