Tokyo Unveils Free Minecraft Metro Map

By JoshuaDec 25,2025

The Japanese government has launched an interactive Minecraft map showcasing the world's largest underground floodwater diversion system. This free downloadable experience allows players to virtually tour one of Tokyo's remarkable yet underappreciated engineering marvels from home.

Officially named the Metropolitan Area Outer Underground Discharge Channel (commonly called G-Cans), this massive infrastructure project features its most famous element - a colossal "pressure adjustment chamber" supported by 59 towering pillars. This breathtaking underground space, often compared to an ancient temple (earning the nickname "chika shinden"), serves as a dramatic filming location for music videos, television dramas like Kamen Rider, and feature films.

While physical tours are available during dry periods, Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) now enables virtual exploration through Minecraft. Their official YouTube channel features an introductory video explaining G-Cans' purpose and its blocky digital recreation.

The Minecraft experience extends beyond the underground facility, including surface-level landscapes with residential areas and waterways that demonstrate G-Cans' real-world flood protection capabilities. Players can even simulate water drainage operations in the virtual control room.

MLIT's Minecraft adaptation serves as an educational tool about flood prevention infrastructure. The virtual tour highlights the facility's immense scale - in reality, G-Cans stretches over 6km beneath Saitama Prefecture. Its five intake shafts collect overflow during Japan's rainy season (June) and typhoon period (typically September), gradually channeling water into the Edogawa River and Tokyo Bay. Since its 2006 completion after 13 years of construction, this engineering feat has significantly reduced flood risks in Greater Tokyo.

The free G-Cans Minecraft map is available for download from the Edogawa River Office website. Compatible versions include Minecraft Bedrock Edition 1.21.1+ or Education Edition 1.21.0+.
