This summer, two major superhero films are gearing up for a box office showdown. The DC Universe's reboot, Superman, arrives on July 11, followed two weeks later by the Marvel Cinematic Universe's The Fantastic Four: First Steps on July 25. While fans of both franchises are debating online, DCU head James Gunn has expressed his lack of interest in engaging with internet rivalries, preferring instead to highlight the positive aspects of each movie.
On the social platform Threads, Gunn was questioned about The Fantastic Four amidst the ongoing fan comparisons between Marvel and DC.
"Their release is two weeks after ours," Gunn responded. "There's enough room for both films to succeed! I have great respect for my friends at Marvel. You can find all sorts of debates online, but I think it's better to focus on the excitement surrounding these movies rather than getting caught up in fan arguments."
Gunn's background includes a significant history with Marvel, having written and directed the beloved Guardians of the Galaxy film series. He is also familiar with the DC world, having directed the well-received 2021 The Suicide Squad.
As co-head of the revitalized DCU alongside Peter Safran, Gunn has taken on the roles of writer, director, and producer for Superman. He is guiding the DCU in a new direction that Warner Bros. hopes will lead to greater success than the previous DCEU. To achieve this, several new DCU films and television series are currently in development, making future clashes with Marvel releases almost certain.
Consider Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, scheduled for June 26, 2026. It will be released just over a month before Spider-Man: Brand New Day premieres on July 31, 2026. In television, the DCU series Lanterns is set to debut on HBO sometime in 2026, while Marvel Television plans to release multiple shows on Disney+, including the second season of Daredevil: Born Again and Vision Quest.
For now, all attention is on Superman and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, with both films under significant pressure to deliver strong box office results. No matter which comic book universe you prefer, July promises to be an exciting month for superhero enthusiasts.
It's also worth noting that Marvel and DC have collaborated on a project that is expected to be one of 2025's top-selling comic releases. The two publishers are partnering on two one-shot crossover specials starring Batman and Deadpool, marking the first official crossover between the Marvel and DC universes in over two decades. Even better, they aren't stopping with Deadpool/Batman #1 and Batman/Deadpool #1. Plans for another crossover event in 2026 are already underway.
