Reviews & Mini-Views

EGGCONSOLE Star Trader PC-8801mkIIsr ($6.49)

This untranslated EGGCONSOLE release presents a familiar dilemma: is the game enjoyable, and is it playable without understanding Japanese? Star Trader, a blend of Japanese adventure game and side-scrolling shooter, is intriguing but not outstanding. The adventure elements feature appealing artwork, and the attempt to integrate a narrative into the shooter format is unique. Gameplay involves conversing with characters, undertaking quests to earn money for ship upgrades, crucial for progressing through the action sequences.

However, the shooting segments suffer from the PC-8801's limitations, resulting in jerky scrolling that detracts from the experience. The game's structure is unclear, but Star Trader is ultimately more interesting than truly good. This brings us to the language barrier. The adventure sections are text-heavy, requiring player input for optimal results. Without understanding Japanese, players miss out on a significant portion of the game and struggle to earn enough credits for ship upgrades. While brute-forcing is possible, it significantly diminishes the enjoyment.

Star Trader offers a glimpse into a developer's experimentation outside their usual style. Sadly, the abundance of Japanese text makes it difficult to recommend wholeheartedly to Western audiences. While some might find enjoyment in exploring the game's mechanics, the language barrier significantly hinders the overall experience.

Crypt Custodian ($19.99)

This top-down action-adventure game follows Pluto, a recently deceased cat banished from the afterlife for misbehaving. Pluto must clean eternally! Explore, battle enemies with a broom, meet eccentric characters, fight bosses, and upgrade abilities. It's a familiar formula, but executed well. Fans of the genre should definitely check it out.
