Hollow Knight: Silksong Dev Hints at Nintendo Switch 2 Reveal With Cake Image

By IsabellaMay 12,2025

It’s been six years since Team Cherry announced Hollow Knight: Silksong, the highly anticipated sequel to the 2017 Metroidvania masterpiece Hollow Knight. Over these years, fans have eagerly awaited updates, with Silksong appearing and disappearing from various gaming showcases. At one point, Microsoft even hinted at a launch before June 2023, but The Game Awards came and went without a mention of Hollow Knight: Silksong. Now, with the recent announcement of the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, fans are buzzing with renewed hope. Could this finally be the moment?

The excitement stems from a seemingly innocuous picture of a cake. Here’s the story: On January 15, William Pellen, co-director of Team Cherry, changed his Twitter/X profile picture to an image of a chocolate cake. Alongside this, he tweeted a cryptic message: “something big is coming. keep your eyes closed tomorrow.”

This tweet coincided with the rumored reveal date of the Nintendo Switch 2 on January 16, which indeed turned out to be true. While Nintendo unveiled the Switch 2, many questions about the console remain unanswered. The timing of Pellen’s tweet led fans to speculate whether he was hinting at the Switch 2 announcement.

The Hollow Knight community then dove deeper into the mystery. Fans reverse-searched the cake image, leading them to a recipe for Brooklyn Blackout Cake on the Bon Appétit website, published on April 2, 2024. This date caught everyone’s attention because Nintendo has scheduled the Nintendo Direct for the Nintendo Switch 2 on Wednesday, April 2, 2025. Fans are convinced that Pellen’s tweet and cake picture are the start of a Silksong alternate reality game (ARG).

The speculation didn’t stop there. Fans are now trying to decode Pellen’s new X/Twitter handle, @everydruidwaswr. A theory by Redditor Representative-True suggests that the handle’s 15-character limit might be significant, with “wr” possibly being the start of a word like “wrong.” Additionally, the connection to a character named the Druid of the Moss Temple, an NPC from Silksong, has fueled further speculation.

Adding to the mystery, Pellen’s new X/Twitter name is “little bomey,” which fans have linked to a wine from Southern Australia, though the spelling differs. Given Team Cherry’s location in Southern Australia, this could be another clue.

When Hollow Knight: Silksong was first announced, Team Cherry confirmed launch platforms as Windows, Mac, Linux, and Nintendo Switch. With six years having passed, could Nintendo have secured Silksong as a launch title for the Switch 2? Is it a timed exclusive? Or is this all just the wild speculation of fans desperate for news?

We’ll have to wait a few more months to find out. In the meantime, keep an eye on everything announced at Nintendo's Switch 2 reveal.
