Guillermo del Toro's passion for Frankenstein might rival that of Dr. Frankenstein himself. At the recent Next on Netflix preview event, the acclaimed writer-director shared a video message, teasing his much-anticipated adaptation of the classic tale. Although a trailer won't be released until this summer, Netflix unveiled a captivating first-look image featuring Oscar Isaac as the iconic mad scientist (see above).

"This film has been on my mind since I was a child — for 50 years," del Toro expressed in the video, as reported by Variety. "I’ve been trying to make it for 20 to 25 years. In fact, some people may even think I am a little bit obsessed with Frankenstein." As he spoke, he gestured towards the array of Frankenstein figures and collectibles in his renowned Bleak House's Frankenstein room.

Del Toro also offered a glimpse of some exclusive footage, which showcased Oscar Isaac's Victor Frankenstein confronting Mia Goth, who plays a seemingly affluent aristocrat, and Jacob Elordi as Frankenstein's monster, characterized by "long black hair, stitched-up gray skin, and a glint of red in his eyes." Unfortunately, this footage is not available online at this time.

"You see, over the decades, the character has fused with my soul in a way that it has become an autobiography," del Toro reflected. "It doesn’t get more personal than this."

Indeed, the director of Pan's Labyrinth and Hellboy isn't exaggerating when he says he's been striving to bring Frankenstein to the screen for decades. Let's delve into the long journey of Netflix's upcoming Frankenstein movie...
