First Glimpse: Nintendo Switch 2 Cartridge Revealed

By HazelMay 25,2025

Nintendo has given us our first detailed glimpse at a Nintendo Switch 2 game cartridge, just ahead of the console's much-anticipated launch next month. The latest video from the Nintendo Today app showcases the official Switch 2 carry case, which features slots designed to safely store up to six cartridges from both the Nintendo Switch 1 and Switch 2.

As previously confirmed, the Switch 2 cartridges maintain the same size and shape as those of the original Switch, allowing the new console to use a single cartridge slot for games across both generations. However, there is a noticeable distinction: the color of the cartridges. Switch 2 cartridges are a striking red, a design choice that appears to be consistent across all titles, not just the Mario Kart World cartridge shown in the video. For those without access to the Nintendo Today app, the video can be viewed via OatmealDome on X / Twitter.

The top of the cartridge's label now features the Switch 2 logo, differentiating it from the original Switch design. Despite these aesthetic changes, the functionality remains the same, including the infamous foul-tasting coating applied by Nintendo to deter accidental ingestion. Takuhiro Dohta, the director of the Switch 2, emphasized the safety aspect in a previous interview with GameSpot, stating, "We don't want anybody to be at risk of any unwanted consumption. We have indeed made it so that if it enters your mouth, you'll spit it out."

The Nintendo Switch 2 is scheduled for release on June 5, 2025, which is just three weeks away. Excitement is building, especially after today's report that Nintendo's key partner, Samsung, is already considering a hardware refresh for the Switch 2, possibly featuring an OLED screen upgrade.
