Fortnite reverses course, restores unlockable Matte Black Master Chief skin
Following significant player backlash, Fortnite has reinstated the unlockable Matte Black style for the Master Chief skin. Epic Games reversed its earlier decision, confirming players can once again unlock this popular style.
The December Fortnite Winterfest event has generally been well-received, but the Master Chief skin's initially announced changes caused considerable controversy. Initially, Epic Games declared the Matte Black style would no longer be unlockable, a move that drew criticism from the community.
The Master Chief skin, a hit since its 2020 debut, returned to the Item Shop in 2024. However, the December 23rd announcement regarding the Matte Black style's removal contradicted previous assurances that it would remain permanently unlockable for Xbox Series X/S players who purchased the skin. This reversal has now been corrected, with Epic Games clarifying that players can still obtain the Matte Black style as originally promised.
Controversy Surrounds Master Chief Skin's Return
The initial announcement sparked outrage among players, with some citing potential FTC violations. This comes on the heels of a $72 million refund issued by the FTC to Fortnite players due to Epic Games' use of "dark patterns." The discontent stemmed from the change affecting both new and existing Master Chief skin owners. Even players who purchased the skin in 2020 were initially prevented from unlocking the Matte Black style.
This isn't the only recent skin-related controversy. The return of the Renegade Raider skin also divided the community, with some veteran players threatening to leave the game. Currently, some players are requesting an "OG" style for those who purchased the Master Chief skin at launch, a request Epic Games seems unlikely to fulfill, despite resolving the Matte Black style issue.
