Recent reports from video game market research firm Niko Partners suggest a mobile Final Fantasy XIV game is in the works, a joint venture between Square Enix and Tencent, slated for release in China. Let's delve into the details of this potential collaboration between these gaming giants.
Square Enix and Tencent Teaming Up for FFXIV Mobile?
Confirmation Still Pending
Niko Partners' latest report details a list of games approved by China's National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA) for release within the country. This list includes a mobile version of Square Enix's popular MMO, Final Fantasy XIV, reportedly developed by Tencent. Other notable titles on the approved list include a mobile and PC version of Rainbow Six, two Marvel games (Marvel Snap and Marvel Rivals), and a mobile adaptation of Dynasty Warriors 8.
While rumors of Tencent's involvement in a Final Fantasy XIV mobile project circulated last month, neither Square Enix nor Tencent have officially confirmed this development.
According to Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad's August 3rd X (formerly Twitter) post, the Final Fantasy XIV mobile game is anticipated to be a standalone MMORPG, distinct from the PC version. However, Ahmad emphasized that this information stems largely from industry speculation and lacks official confirmation.
Given Tencent's significant presence in the mobile gaming market, this partnership aligns with Square Enix's stated ambition to expand its flagship titles, like Final Fantasy, to multiple platforms. Square Enix announced this multiplatform strategy earlier in May, outlining its aggressive pursuit of broader accessibility for its key franchises.
