Elder Scrolls Online Subclasses Come After 11 Long Years of Fans Requesting It

The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO) has finally introduced a long-awaited feature that fans have been eagerly anticipating for over a decade: subclasses. This exciting addition allows players to tailor their gameplay experience more intricately. Read on to learn about the mechanics of this new system and what's in store for future updates.

Over 3000 Combinations of Skill Lines

Celebrating its 10th Anniversary, The Elder Scrolls Online has big plans in store. During the ESO Direct 2025 event on April 10, Zenimax Online Studios announced the introduction of subclassing, a feature fans have requested for years. Traditionally, players had to start from scratch to access new skill trees, which was cumbersome in an MMO. Now, with the addition of subclasses, players can mix and match skill lines without the need to create new characters.

To utilize this feature, players must reach level 50. Upon reaching this milestone, they can retain one skill line from their base class and swap out two others for any of the six available classes. This system unlocks over 3000 combinations, enabling players to craft their ideal playstyle.

ESO Game Director Rich Lambert expressed confidence in the new feature, noting that the team conducted extensive testing. Despite potential increases in Power Levels, Lambert assured that the developers are comfortable with the balance.

Zenimax Online is shifting to a seasonal content model, as announced by Studio Director Matt Firor. This change aims to allow more experimentation in content delivery and to address player feedback more effectively. Firor explained, "We want to keep telling great stories, but also mix in new ideas and gameplay systems, and that's exactly what we're going to do, but we'll do this in a different cadence, one that allows us, the developers, to broaden our focus and increase variety."

The next chapter, "Seasons of the Worm Cult," is a significant sequel to the game's original Molag Bal storyline, developed over a decade. It introduces the Isle of Solstice, a new zone where players will delve into the resurgence of the Worm Cult.

Producer Susan Kath clarified that while "Seasons of the Worm Cult" will span most of the year, future seasons are expected to last between three to six months. Zenimax plans to introduce "remix" seasons that revisit previous storylines, with a Dark Brotherhood-themed season on the horizon.
